What to see in Rome in 2 days
Smart tips on where to go so you don't miss the best of the Eternal City
Only have 48 hours to explore Rome? No problem: with the right itinerary, you can savor the best of the Eternal City, including iconic monuments, secret glimpses and breaks with breathtaking views. Perfect for a last-minute weekend or city getaway, this article takes you step-by-step through what to see in Rome in 2 days, avoiding stress and endless lines.
Morning: Colosseum, Imperial Forum and Palatine Hill
Start your day early and head straight to the Colosseum: book your ticket online in advance (preferably with arena access) and get ready for one of Rome's most iconic experiences.
The same ticket also gets you into the Imperial Forum and Palatine Hill, where you can lose yourself among columns, arches and breathtaking views of the city.
The whole ancient heart of Rome is best explored on foot. Roma Barberini, for example, is a stone's throw from the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps-a strategic area to stay if you want to experience the city without wasting time on transportation.
Afternoon: from Piazza Venezia to the Trevi Fountain
After lunch, walk to Piazza Venezia and climb the Altar of the Fatherland-if you want a vantage point, take the elevator to the top.
Then get lost in the alleys to the Trevi Fountain, flip a coin and make a wish (mandatory, non-negotiable).
Continue to the Spanish Steps, climb the steps of Trinità dei Monti and be inspired by the view of the city. A tasty stop? Sandwich at Pane e Salame or an ice cream at La Romana.
Evening: Trastevere by night
Cross the Tiber and immerse yourself in the city's most authentic soul: Trastevere. Warm lights, outdoor tables and music in the streets.
The area of Porta Pia, quiet and well connected, allows you to get around the whole center during the day and enjoy relaxing in the evening. Getting back after dinner will be easy, even if you get lost in the alleys of Trastevere (which is highly likely).
Recommended dinner? Tonnarello (make reservations!), then get carried away by the atmosphere.
Day 2: art and breathtaking views
Morning: the Vatican and its treasures
Get up early and go straight to St. Peter's Square: the Basilica is free, but getting in without a line is a privilege for the few (get there by 8:30). The interior leaves you speechless, but the real coup is the climb to the Dome: effort repaid by a unique view.
From the area Cornelia, more residential but very well served by the Metro A, you can get to St. Peter's in minutes and enjoy the city's holiest neighborhood before the crowds arrive.
Immediately afterwards, visit the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel (book online with morning hours): between the Gallery of Maps, Cortile della Pigna and the wonder of the Chapel frescoed by Michelangelo, it is a concentration of absolute beauty.
Afternoon: Castel Sant'Angelo and historic center
After the Vatican, stroll down Via della Conciliazione to Castel Sant'Angelo. As you climb to the top, the terrace gives you one of the best views of the city. Cross Ponte Sant'Angelo to continue your itinerary in the heart of the center.
From there, three must-see stops await you: Piazza Navona, Campo de' Fiori and the Pantheon, all within a few minutes' walk of each other.
If you're hungry, pizza by the slice at Roscioli 's or a supplì at Supplizio's.
Evening: final toast with a view
Close your weekend with a panoramic aperitif: from the Terrazza Borromini you can admire Piazza Navona from above. On the other hand, if you want something more simple but equally romantic, go up to the Pincio at sunset and enjoy Rome coming alive.
